It’s Playtime – Creative Portrait Photography Norfolk

This time I’ve been playing with an image of the fantastically photogenic Holly, taken earlier this year at Duxford in Essex.   Interestingly, my partner, when peering over my shoulder…  didn’t see the crow, hated the moon and said, ‘what’s the point of that then’?This got me thinking, as there’s nothing to ‘get’!   This picture was simply created by me on a flight of fancy.

Why do we look for meanings in pictures?  Why aren’t we happy when there isn’t one? And why do we need to understand an image to make it viable?  To this day, critics still attempt to find posthumous meaning in the work or artists and authours, and numerous ideas are debated.  There’s a high probability that many are wrong and don’t adhere to what the artist originally intended… that’s if there was any intention there in the first place!  I Hope you like the picture.

Love, romance and… pancakes!

Happy Valentines day people. Let love flip you over like a nicely browning pancake – but may it not find you stuck on the ceiling or being half eaten by the dog (or cat).  Have a deliriously decadent day, tell at least one person you love them and don’t forget that pancake… or two, or three, or the lemon - then there’s the sugar…

Caister Victorious! Three-way Battle Judging, Norfolk

Last evening I spent a pleasant couple of hours judging a three-way camera club battle between Great Yarmouth, Caister and Lowestoft.  These friendly competitions are held throughout our county and beyond, with each club entering 5 monochrome prints, 5 colour prints and 5 digitally projected images.  All entries are mixed together so the judge doesn’t know which image belongs to which club, and the club with the most points at the end of the competition recieves a shield.

The evening was hosted by Great Yarmouth who made me feel very welcome and plied me with coffee and biscuits (although I did manage with great effort to avoid the biscuits).  We started with the colour prints, of which there was some superb Natural History examples, luminous landscapes and expert portraits.  After a short break we continued with monochrome prints, my favourite – there’s something about monochrome that focuses one’s attention on subject matter and emotion!

After another short break we continued with the projected images… I must admit to seeing some of the best pdi’s in a long while… I don’t usually award many 10s (the top mark), but ended up with, if I remember rightly, around 4 or 5.  Particular favourites in this category were… a superbly rendered image of 4 airplanes and associated smoke trails, this shot had a filmic quality that jumped off the screen, another was of a female who had apparently missed a train – the choice of sepia gave a timeless feel, along with great technique in portraiting the movement of the train.

Thank you Great Yarmouth for inviting me along and for your kindness and hospitality.  And well done Caister, worthy winners.

It’s Playtime – Portrait Photography Norfolk

At times I get the urge to revisit an old image and add a little something extra.  Peering over my shoulder, whilst I was adding the finishing touches to this image, my partner commented: ‘so what nonsense have you been watching today?’  I should point out that his definition of nonsense in association with me, is anything sci-fi.  Being an engineer, he’s far to logical and has little understanding for my obsession with the wierd and wonderful, which makes it so much more fun!

UPDATE:  This picture has just been awarded GOLD by the SWPP.

Client Favourites – Beth and Jamie – Portrait Photography Norfolk

Today Beth and Jamie decided upon their favourite images from our shoot.  Now I’ve never been a betting person, but I would loose miserably if I put money on which shots a client will choose… we are all so very different with regards what makes us tick!  The images this gorgeous couple chose (shown below) will be on display at their wedding later this year.  If you want to see some of my favourites from the shoot take a look here: more Beth and Jamie.

Make time for statement shots – Bridal Portraiture Norfolk

Today I would like to share some bridal portraits from a recent shoot in Oddfellows Hotel, Chester, with model Charlie Edwards.

Why show you a model?  Because I’d like to demonstrate that all brides can have fantastic pictures like this, taken on their wedding day, but many miss the chance.  Why?  Simple, they don’t factor time into their itinerary.  Often the photographer is the last to be thought of with regards timings for the wedding.   This is fine if the couple are happy with traditional, naturally lit or on-camera flash photographs.

What I’d love all propsective brides to consider is… could you factor three fifteen-minute slots into your wedding day to achieve three wonderful statement images similar to those shown below (or even one fifteen minute session to achieve one statement shot)?    Why so much time?  Each statement shot needs to be expertly lit to achieve the effects you see below, this takes time and organisation.

Your wedding day is all about you - If you want it, make time for it!   Until next time…

Education is the key… McGillicuddy and me!

Be incredible, be imaginative, be creative, be impulsive, be inspiring and most of all be the very best you can be!  That’s my mantra for 2012 – so I’m proud and excited to announce I’ve secured myself a mentor of the very highest calibre, a Lord no less!  Titles aside, he really is one of the best photographers in the UK at present.  Here’s a little taste of things to come.

Thanks to model - the perpetually professional and inexhaustable Ms Charlie Edwards for her patience.  Thanks to my mentor (drum roll…) Lord of Kerry and lighting wizard extraordinaire, Mr Damien McGillicuddy for his sharing of knowledge.

Chester, photography training and hooligan squirrels

I’ve just returned from a wonderful few days in the beautiful city of Chester.  This trip was part time-out, but mostly bridal portrait training with a lighting wizard in a quirky location.   It was lovely to eat, shop and wander – Chester is the most friendliest of cities!

Presents were purchased for loved ones left at home, and much calming was needed for my accompanying colleague.  Why?  A gang of hooligan squirrels terrorized her in Grosvenor Park – much swinging of camera bag and a launch of expletives didn’t dislodge the little critter that ran up her leg in search of food!  So the moral of this story is… if you visit, take nuts!

I’ll share the fabulous bridal portraits captured, and details of the training in the next few days – my brides for 2012 are in for a real treat!
